Carp France Newsletter - January 2009.

Welcome, from the first of many Carp France Fisheries newsletters. Severine and I would like to wish all our clients a prosperous New Year.

As you may or may not know Carp France was one of the first English owned and managed fisheries in South West France. Our longer summer months and warm weather make for the perfect environment for great growth rate for carp.

Although in the past nine seasons the fishery has gone from strength to strength due to our high level of repeat clients that are happy with our level of service and not forgetting articles and endorsements written by Mr Chris Yates plus numerous other high profile anglers and films that have been made here too.

Nevertheless, despite our success, I could not help but feel there was room for improvement. This is where my breeding programme in search for the ultimate carp started. Like so many other fisheries in France when we first stocked Lac Lucie and the Kingfisher Lake back in 1999, I stocked our waters with the Italian strain of carp.

The advantage of the Italian strain was a rapid growth rate, but the down side of the Italian is they do not put up much of a fight until they are under the rod tip.

So from there on, I set out to breed my own strain of carp that not only had a good growth rate but also the power to fight hard from the moment it is hooked. After years of research and hard work I found two strains of carp that had everything I was looking for by cross breeding the Italian strain and a certain Spanish strain - a carp that has a rapid growth rate and fights all the way to the landing net.
Within five years of introducing 100’s of my own strain of carp fry into a 5 acre stock lake, and yearly nettings to remove the slow growers, they’ve grown to 32lbs whilst averaging 25lbs of hard fighting rapid growth carp.

Back in November 2008 we set out to move the 60 carp from our stock lake to the Kingfisher Lake and Lac Lucie...

Netting Carp November 2008 Carp France
Netting in November '08 - 200 carp in total!

...to find somewhat of a surprise, my calculation of the 60 remaining new strain carp was based on the amount the amount of carp removed over the last 4 years netting and death through natural mortality. The day of last netting 2008, instead of finding 60 carp, we netted a staggering 200 plus (I think I need to buy myself a calculator!). All in turn were moved to the Kingfisher Lake and Lac Lucie as both lakes had not been restocked since 1999. So we are looking forward to a very interesting season 2009. With plenty of runs, hard fighting fish and not forgetting our existing stocks of big carp and cats.

A bigger Lucie with a bigger carp!
A bigger Lucie with carp to match!

"Tight Lines!"

Paul and Severine
