Thoughts on his experience's at Carp France.

by Chris Yates

First impressions are always important to a fisherman, especially a pernickety fisherman like me. I wanted to see overgrown banks. I wanted to see trees leaning into the margins. I wanted shallows as well as deeps. I wanted atmosphere, I wanted a water which would shimmer at me in a vaguely seductive way.
I stood on the dam, beneath an old oak tree, quietly surveying the scene, happy that all my requirements had been so perfectly fulfilled. It was almost as if this ancient place had been designed for me.

The lake was about seven acres lying along a wooded valley that ran east-west one of a chain of mostly smaller pools, Paul owning two of them - the other one laying below the main lake.

Though it had, before this year, never been 'seriously' fished by carp anglers, Paul did show me a photograph of two local anglers holding what was obviously a very big specimen, a mirror of at least fifty pounds.

A glow worm was just appearing from under a leaf by my left boot when the foil magically rose to the butt ring. I struck more clearly than before and connected with something that remained motionless.

When it began to move, it simply wallowed round in a very slow circle as if confused by what had happened. Or maybe it didn't think anything had happened at all and was merely continuing to search for food, unaware that I was struggling to remain calm , the rod bent almost to the butt, the line chiming against the rings. It seemed this was the biggest carp I'd ever hooked, but I never discovered how big because a curious grating sensation suddenly ended with a depressingly slack line.

Surely it couldn't have broken? '17bs' I wound in and there was the swan shot, but not the hook. The line had been severed just above it. I recognised the neatly flattened end of the nylon. The carp had bitten through it with its pharyngeal teeth - something that hadn't happened to me since my Redmire days, twenty years ago (when the fish - for some reason - started to swallow red kidney beans too enthusiastically).

I felt a little dejected and made a large hole in the bank with my forehead. The next day I hooked a beautiful looking common, that though not a giant, looked all of 30lbs.
However, I'd proved that stalking had a certain potential. Paul and his family got on extremely well with my kids, but before we left he said to me;

"Come back in the autumn on your own and we'll do it properly!"

Tim Paisleys Carp World magazine:

"Carp France, the family holiday heaven to set the heart racing and the reels spinning"

Chris Yates described our lakes in 'Carp World' as:

"Well off the beaten track, well clear of the over-intensive carp circuit, these pools each have a unique atmosphere. Offering wonderful fishing, especially for the stalker and have the potential to make even your biggest landing net look small"

Richard Garner of Day Tickets wrote:

"There are many places in your life, you visit and forget. This is not one of them! The fishing is just something to do while you waste away your days in one of the best places I have ever fished"

Simon Clarke  of CCG says:

"I am simply breathless!  This is simply as top class fishery as you could ever hope to find. With the hardest fighting cats I have ever caught, and I didn’t even carp fish"

We also offer free fishing tuition for those who do not get enough bank-side time, or if you are feeling a little bit rusty, please just ask.

Here at Carp France, we own and manage our lakes so as to provide you with the level of service and quality over the past years that makes Carp France the leader in quality family fishing in France.
